Apple's iPad Mini trounces Microsoft's Surface RT Tablet... in web browsing

Theres no doubt that the battle between tablets will mark 2012 Holiday season. Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Microsoft, Samsung… theyre all battling for their space for the consumer dollars. However, comparing which product might be the best performing one is a daunting task, as different operating systems prevent unified benchmarks.

If you think that benchmarking tablets is not as important, as user experience dictates the sales of the products - think twice. It is exactly the benchmarks that dictate the user experience, since the lack of processing power is what keeps the experience behind.

For example, Apple has kept the market share lead in the tablet space, even though Android devices made a big progress forward. In order to address the rise of smaller tablets, the company recently released iPad Mini, which utilizes Apples own 32nm A5 processor (also used in the latest iPod Touch), and the iPad 4, which relies on brand-new A6 processor. Big challenger for the lead is Microsofts first computer, Surface RT tablet. Microsoft is using Nvidias Tegra 3 processor, which is a year old design.

Futuremark came first out the door with a benchmark that compares Apples latest to Microsofts first, and the results are quite unexpected.

We give you the quote from Futuremark commenting the scores achieved using its universal HTML5 benchmark called Peacekeeper:

Microsoft Surface RT - Peacekeeper score 348

Tested with Peacekeeper, our universal browser benchmark, the Microsoft Surface is slower than the iPad 2 and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Now, its one thing to be slower than other tablets, but the Surface is also slower than the latest phones. For instance, the browser performance of the Galaxy S III is nearly twice that of the Surface, and the iPhone 5 is more than two and a half times faster.

Incidentally, the scores from the Surface are in line with other Tegra 3 devices when running the internal beta build of our next 3DMark, which makes the browser performance all the more disappointing. Internet Explorer 10 is still far behind the competition when it comes to speed.

Apple iPad Mini - Peacekeeper score 515

The iPad Mini has the same dual-core A5 found in the iPad 2, a chip with near identical CPU performance to the A5X found in the iPad 3rd gen. Indeed, Peacekeeper scores from the iPad 2, iPad 3rd gen and iPad Mini are all at the same level provided they are running iOS 6. Against the competition, the iPad Mini outperforms the Nexus 7 but is slower than the Galaxy S III.

Apple says the A6X processor in the 4th gen iPad doubles the CPU and graphics power of the A5X in the third-generation device. Peacekeeper has the 3rd gen iPad with iOS 6 scoring 522 while the 4th gen device scores 951 earning it a place at the top of our leaderboard for mobile devices.

Now, if you are wondering how does a contemporary PC fare, we took a 15.6" Acer Timeline M3 ultrabook with Intel Core i7 processor and GeForce GT 640 graphics card. The score we achieved was no less than 2977, which clearly shows that with tablets, youll sacrifice some smoothness e.g. user experience. Futuremark also delivered an URL to us with the benchmark results, but at the time of writing - the URL in question was offline.



Angry Birds Valentine's Day edition here; coming to Nintendo 3DS and Wii

Fans of Angry Birds will be pleased to know that the Valentines Day edition is here, well, for iOS and Android platforms. If you have Angry Birds Seasons on your iPad, iPhone or Android smartphones, be sure to download the update.

Rovio, the company behind the popular bird-flinging game, has also confirmed thatAngry Birdswillalso beavailable on the Nintendo Wii and 3DS game consoles later this year; ithas already been available on Mac and Windows-based netbooks and notebook PCs and Sony has announced the game will also come onto the PSP and PS3. Looks like you can play the game on almost all platforms and game consoles.

Besides a new update for Android and iOS for Angry Birds that brings about 30 challenging levels on Ham Em High, the company has also unveiled a secret code that allows users to access a Rio-centric level of the game in late January. Rovio has partnered with 20th Century Fox for a new Angry Birds game called "Angry Birds Rio". To access the Rio-centric level, users must first get to Ham Em High, level 13-12; fling the white bird backward to unlock a golden egg which you will then have the option tokick a golden football.

Apple to include contactless payment services in future iDevices

Ever wished that you had more room in your wallet? Well, if the rumours are to be believed, you can soon free up space by leaving your credit cards and loyalty cards at home, and bringing out your iPhone or iPad instead.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly in the process of building a mobile payment service based on near-field communication or NFC technology. This technology is currently built into Visas payWave and MasterCards PayPass-enabled credit cards, and allows consumers to pay by simply waving their cards over a special card reader.

While no firm release date has been set by Apple, Richard Doherty, director of consulting firm Envisioneering Group, told Bloomberg that this service might be launched "as early as mid-2011". Apple is also expected to revamp iTunes to store not only users credit card details, but also details on their loyalty credits and points.

It is also suggested that Apple could use this service to improve its iAd service and provide consumers with personalised ads based on their spending habits, and also increase its revenue from this service by charging advertisers more for these ads.

Apple has reportedly applied for a patent on a system that uses NFC to share information between various Apple devices, and has also created a prototype payment terminal for this rumoured mobile payment service.

AMD Rev H CPU Based Servers In Q2 2007

Makers are already shipping dual-core servers based on AMD's AM2 processors. As for the quad-core processors, server ODMs have already received samples of AMD's Revision (Rev) H and Intel's Xeon 3200 and have started developing supporting motherboards. Rev H-based servers are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2007, while shipments of Xeon 3200-based servers will begin in January 2007.

AMD Safe Boot Technology

AMD is now developing a Safe Boot technology with mainboard and chipset manufactures to enhance the compatibility. The technology is to add a unified register code such that the system can boot up without appropriate Microcode. With that Microcode, the processor’s voltage and clock are set to a minimum only. Users still have to update the BIOS under the DOS mode. Manufacturers will enclose a bootable OS in the driver disk so that one may update the BIOS much easier. However, AMD has no release schedule for Safe Boot technology yet.

Asus warranty does not protect computers during alien invasions

Asus computers are not protected by its warranty in the event of an invasion by aliens from outer space, it has been revealed.

The unusual clause in the Asus warranty was recently spotted by a number of technology news outlets, suggesting that lawyers might have a sense of humour after all.It is not clear if this exclusion will affect sales, as no studies have been conducted regarding how many alien abductees are loyal Asus customers.It might also be possible that Asus knows more than the rest of us about the possibility of extraterrestrial life.We wonder if competitors will now start including a similar clause. Of course, trying to get a refund for a zapped computer might be the last thing on our minds when the little green men start landing.Source: Gizmodo
